CYBERJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has launched an investigation into a viral video showing a group of individuals, believed to be social media influencers, handing leftover food to a homeless man.
The probe follows public complaints over the video, which many deemed exploitative and offensive.
MCMC said it takes a serious view of the act of creating and sharing content that exploits marginalised groups merely to gain views and provoke public unease.
“The spread of content that belittles or insults an individual’s dignity is not only unethical but contributes to the normalisation of inhumane behaviour in society,” it said in a press statement today (Aug 5).
The commission confirmed that the investigation is being conducted under existing legal provisions, with firm action to be taken against any party found guilty.
The public is reminded not to upload or circulate provocative content that could threaten public order.
MCMC also warned that the sharing of offensive, false, or threatening content may result in prosecution under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588).
If convicted, offenders may face a fine of up to RM500,000, a maximum jail term of two years, or both.
