CYBERJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has taken firm legal action by filing a civil suit against two Telegram channels, “Edisi Siasat” and “Edisi Khas”, identified for disseminating content that allegedly violates the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

The content shared by these channels is said to have the potential to erode public trust in national institutions and threaten societal harmony.

“Due to the unsatisfactory level of compliance, MCMC has applied for and successfully obtained an interim injunction from the High Court as a last resort to stop the dissemination of such harmful content and prevent its recurrence,” according to a press statement by MCMC yesterday (June19).

This marks the first legal action of its kind taken against a social media platform provider, specifically targeting Telegram, which holds an Application Service Provider (Class) [ASP(C)] license in Malaysia.

“This decisive move comes in response to Telegram’s repeated failure to address harmful content reported through official channels, despite multiple attempts at engagement and cooperation by MCMC.

“Telegram will be given the opportunity to present its defence in accordance with principles of justice and fundamental rights,” the statement said.

As the regulatory authority, MCMC reminds all social media platform providers of their responsibility in managing and moderating digital content on their platforms. The commission warned that it will not hesitate to take similar action against other platforms to ensure the safety and wellbeing of users.

MCMC remains committed to maintaining a digital space in Malaysia that is safe, ethical, and compliant with national laws.
