KUCHING: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) yesterday welcomed the announcement made by its minister Gobind Singh Deo regarding the implementation of special communications packages for the differently-abled (OKU).

MCMC chairman Al-Ishsal Ishak acknowledged that the announcement was very timely and expressed confidence that the packages which were being offered at reasonable prices would bring considerable benefits to the OKU community.

“The special packages will enable the OKU to reap the immense benefits of the digital economy. It is also hoped that the government’s effort will encourage the community to use the Internet to boost their online businesses,” he said in a media statement issued from Cyberjaya yesterday.

Al-Ishsal said that MCMC would monitor the implementation of the special packages by the telecommunications companies so as to ensure that the OKU truly benefit from the initiative.

Seven main telecom-munications companies in Malaysia, namely Celcom, Digi, Maxis, TM, Time dotCom, YTL and U Mobile will offer discounts ranging from RM10 to RM15 for mobile services and between RM10 and RM44 for fixed services.

To enjoy the special packages offered, the OKU must provide supporting documents such as their identity card and OKU card issued by the Department of Social Welfare Malaysia (JKM).

For families with OKU children, they are entitled to the special packages by providing proof of guardianship.

Registration process for the special packages can only be done at the respective service providers’ branches and there will be no penalties imposed for switching from existing contracts to the special packages.

The special communications package offerings for the OKU show the government’s continuous commitment in providing the best for the rakyat, especially the OKU community.

To date, there are 572 Pusat Internet locations in Malaysia with special computers, software and applications for the OKU, which allows them to have access to communications services in order to increase their standard of living and ease their daily activities.
