MIRI: The state government’s commitment towards enhanced healthcare facilities and services was exemplified today with the official opening of the Medan Miri Hospital block.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas commended the initiative by the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), calling it a well-timed and vital decision to meet the growing healthcare demands in the region.

Uggah’s remarks, delivered by Minister for Transport Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, highlighted the project as a significant milestone in the state’s healthcare journey.

“The construction of this facility aligns with GPS’s commitment to improving healthcare services across the state,” said Uggah.

The Medan Miri Hospital block was originally conceived under the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) to address the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The facility, valued at RM2.17 million and constructed by Shafwah Resources Sdn. Bhd., features 100 beds, covered walkways, toilets, bathrooms, office spaces, and comprehensive electrical and mechanical infrastructure.

The block, which unofficially commenced operations on April 26, is strategically located near Block A’s cafeteria and Surau Al-Jannah at Miri Hospital.

It is designed to alleviate congestion in Blocks A and B of the hospital by providing additional space for patients, especially those with serious infectious diseases requiring ICU or non-ICU care.

“If not required for Covid-19 cases, this facility can also cater to regular patients,” added Uggah.

The hospital is part of a broader initiative by the Sarawak government in collaboration with Malaysia’s Ministry of Health. The GPS-led administration funded the construction costs after receiving federal approval.

The Medan Miri facility is one of three field hospitals constructed in Sarawak, alongside similar projects in Sibu and Kuching, with a collective budget of RM9 million.

“The innovative and flexible approach to building field hospitals in Sarawak has proven effective during emergencies like the Covid-19 pandemic,” noted Uggah.

“These facilities enable healthcare workers to handle urgent situations, ensuring patients with infectious diseases are treated in isolated areas while maintaining hybrid hospital operations for both Covid-19 and non-Covid-19 cases.”

The hospital block represents a proactive solution to challenges faced during pandemics and other emergencies. It ensures the healthcare system in Sarawak remains resilient and capable of addressing complex conditions.

Dr Jack Wong, director of Miri Hospital, was also present at the opening ceremony.

The new facility is expected to significantly ease the burden on existing hospital infrastructure while enhancing patient care standards.
