KUCHING: The media is a key strategic partner in driving the growth and visibility of Sarawak’s arts, culture and creative industry.
Sarawak Arts Council’s (MSS) Chief Executive Officer, Dr Suffian Jelat, said the media plays an important role not only in delivering information, but also in shaping public perception, increasing awareness, and promoting Sarawak’s artistic and cultural development to both local and international audiences.
“This is the first time we have held a programme together with the media, where we have always recognised the importance of the media as a strategic partner in developing Sarawak’s artistic, cultural and creative industries.
“In the era of digital communication, the media is no longer just a means of conveying information, but a strategic partner that plays an important role in shaping public perception, enhancing awareness, and promoting Sarawak’s artistic, cultural and creative industries,” he said.
Suffian said this in his speech during the ‘Majlis Seni Sarawak Bersama Media’ event at Theatre Hotel here yesterday evening (Tuesday, June 30).
He added that the relationship with the media must be based on trust, open communication, and mutual understanding, in order to make art and culture a catalyst for the development of the country’s social, economic and identity.
He said MSS views the media as an essential bridge between the organisation and the community, helping ensure that programmes, initiatives and achievements in the creative sector are effectively communicated and widely understood.
“Consistent and quality media coverage is crucial in highlighting various arts and cultural initiatives, while also supporting efforts to strengthen the creative economy through greater exposure of festivals, performances, crafts, music and dance.
“The creative industry also benefits from media support as it helps open opportunities for artists, attract investment, and boost cultural tourism in the state,” he said.
Suffian said MSS hopes to further strengthen cooperation with media practitioners through more proactive information-sharing, comprehensive coverage, and the use of digital platforms and creative content to elevate Sarawak’s cultural profile.
He also expressed hope that media partnerships will continue to support MSS in promoting inclusivity and positioning Sarawak’s arts and culture as a catalyst for social and economic development.
