KUCHING: Around 40 media practitioners recently took part in the five-day data journalism workshop organised by the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI).

The workshop, sponsored by Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg in collaboration with the Federation of Sarawak Journalists Association (FSJA), the Kuching Division Journalists Association (KDJA), took place at Pullman Hotel Kuching from Oct 16 and 17, and from Oct 24 to 26.

Datuk Mustapa Omar, the new chief executive officer of MPI, attended the closing ceremony of the workshop this afternoon and issued participation certificates to all attendees.

“We are thankful for the opportunity to organise this workshop for the media here. Data journalism is a necessary skill for journalists today, especially moving into the digital era.

“We hope that course participants were able to grasp the skills learnt throughout these five days and be able to apply these skills in their day to day reporting,” he said during the closing ceremony.

Meanwhile, KDJA president Ronnie Teo hoped that more of such workshops can be organised in Sarawak.

“We thank MPI alongside the Sarawak state government for their continuous support to the media in Kuching, teaching us the many new data journalism tools out there to enhance our capabilities.

“We look forward to more of these courses for our media members in our efforts to elevate our skill sets, especially digitally,” he said.
