KUCHING: The Melanau Heritage Gallery in Oya is set for further expansion with the third phase currently awaiting approval from the State Building Design Committee (SBDC).
Women, Children, and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said the design work has been completed.
She said the third phase will involve construction worth RM14.5 million, featuring 10 components that highlight Melanau heritage, traditions, and local icons.
“The gallery will include interactive elements such as workshops and exhibitions on food, dance, Kaul rituals, and traditional medicine.
“There will also be a space where visitors can experience the culture firsthand, making the gallery more engaging and educational,” she said.
Fatimah, who is the Dalat assemblywoman, said the RM193,006 grant was awarded by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg to the Oya Melanau Charitable Trust.
She said the fund will be used to support the operations of the Melanau Heritage Gallery, which began welcoming visitors after its completion in 2022.
She noted that the Melanau Heritage Gallery is a people’s project funded by the state government under the leadership of the Premier.
“The gallery has since recorded a total of 6,432 visitors, comprising locals, children, and foreign tourists.
“The gallery plays a key role in preserving and promoting Melanau heritage for the benefit of the community and future generations,” she added.
So far, Fatimah said two phases of the gallery have been completed, with the final phase set to further enhance the cultural and historical displays.
