KUCHING: The Mental Health Association of Sarawak (MHAS) Kuching Branch successfully convened its Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2025 at The Imperial Hotel Kuching.

It brought together members, healthcare advocates, and community stakeholders in a continued mission to promote mental health awareness and support services across the region.

Among the highlights of the AGM was an informative session on the national mySalam scheme, delivered by Naziha Marzuki, Claim Manager for the programme.

mySalam is a public health protection initiative for Malaysia’s B40 income group, providing financial coverage for critical illnesses, hospitalisation, and death.

The session focused on the scheme’s recent expansion to include mental health conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder.

“The inclusion of mental illness in a national protection scheme marks a breakthrough in recognising the importance of mental health,” said MHAS Kuching Branch Chairman, Dr Ng Boon Seng.

“We are proud to play our part in disseminating this important information to the public.”.

In line with its advocacy mission, MHAS Kuching also launched the Kuching Mental Health Charity Run 1.0, set to take place on November 2 at MBKS Garden.

“The event seeks to raise public awareness, reduce stigma around mental health, and support the association’s long-term fundraising efforts,” added Dr Ng.

Proceeds will go towards developing a new two-storey MHAS building, which will house administrative offices, a community space, and a mental health Halfway Home for individuals transitioning from institutional care back into society.

Currently, the Halfway Home is operating out of Banglo Lada in Sentosa.

The run features two categories open to all ages: 3-kilometre (km) Fun Run and 5-km Run.

“Registration is RM50 and includes a running T-shirt, medal, and bib number. Participants also stand a chance to win exciting lucky draw prizes.

“Registration is open now and closes on September 30, with sign-ups available via this link: https://cps4.me/KMHCR2.

The event is proudly supported by the City Joggers Club, underscoring the spirit of collaboration in promoting both mental and physical wellbeing.

For more information, participants may contact Sylvester (016-8082015) and Angelicia (013-8236097).
