KUCHING: Two local men, one with an extensive criminal history, are in police custody following a narcotics bust that uncovered suspected methamphetamine worth more than RM600.
Acting on information, police raided a house at Jalan Song last Saturday (Jan 10), detaining two men for further inspection.
Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said it led to the discovery of 12 plastic packets containing crystalline substances believed to be methamphetamine, weighing 6.23g and valued at around RM685.
Both suspects, aged 31 and 44, were arrested and taken to Kuching Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (NCID) office together with the seized drugs for further action.
“Initial urine screening tests on the suspects returned positive results for amphetamine and methamphetamine.
“Background checks found that the first suspect has one prior offence, while the second suspect has 17 prior criminal records,” he said.
The men have been remanded for four days until Jan 15 to facilitate investigations under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
If convicted, they face imprisonment for a term of up to five years and caning of up to nine strokes.
Alexson said the successful operation was the result of sustained intelligence-gathering and cooperation from the public, adding that police will not compromise with anyone involved in drug-related activities
