SIBU: The Sibu Methodist Schools Alumni Association (SMSAA) on Saturday night successfully convened its 52nd Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the SMK Methodist Alumni Room here.
The meeting chaired by the association’s president, Joseph Chieng Jin Ek, who is also Bukit Assek state assemblyman, proceeded smoothly in a cordial atmosphere.
During the AGM, the association also presented the 2025 Education Incentive Awards to its members’ children; 11 awards were distributed.
This initiative reflected the association’s continued commitment to encouraging academic excellence and supporting education.
In his address, Chieng reviewed SMSAA’s activities and achievements throughout 2025.
He noted that apart from continuously assisting the development of SMK Methodist and SJKC Methodist, and welcoming alumni returning to their alma mater, the association had actively organised and participated in various educational, sports and community service programmes.
Key highlights of the year, according to him, included the successful organisation of an education fair at the school hall, providing students with valuable academic and further education information and participation in Tiong Hin Alumni Basketball Invitational Tournament 2025.
Besides, SMSAA also participated in the Open House cum Food and Fun Fair organised by the Sarawak Society for the Blind, Sibu Branch, assisting in its fundraising efforts and demonstrating social responsibility.
“In addition, we also allocated RM82,000 for the construction of three pickleball courts at SMK Methodist, enhancing sports facilities for students and alumni,” he added.
Chieng further highlighted a resolution passed at last year’s AGM, allowing graduates of SMK Methodist to join the SMSAA within six months after leaving school with a registration fee of only RM2.
He pointed out that the move aimed to encourage more young alumni to become involved in the association and strengthen alumni continuity.
The AGM, he said, also passed an important resolution to appoint the president, secretary and treasurer as trustees of the association, authorising them to invest in Malaysian blue-chip stocks.
He explained that dividends generated from these investments would serve as a sustainable source of income for the association, helping to diversify and strengthen its financial resources.
Chieng emphasised that SMSAA would continue to uphold its mission of serving the alma mater, uniting alumni and giving back to society.
“With the collective support of our committee members and alumni, the association remains committed to advancing meaningful educational, sports and community initiatives in the years ahead,” Chieng added.
Also present was the principal of SMK Methodist, Philip Ling.
