KUCHING: A male tenant leapt from the third floor of a building at Metrocity, Matang to save himself after a fire that ripped through a rental room last night (Nov 24).

The incident, which broke out around 8.55 pm, engulfed a room on the second floor and sent thick smoke rising through the structure.

Intense heat forced the man with no option but to jump before help arrived. He was later confirmed to be safe and uninjured.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said firefighters from Petra Jaya, Batu Lintang and Padungan stations were dispatched to the scene following an emergency call.

They managed to bring the fire under control by 9.25 pm using water from a nearby hydrant.

The team wrapped up the operation at 9.54 pm. The cause of the fire and losses incurred are still under investigation.
