KUCHING: Guillermo “Memo” Ochoa has officially retired from professional football, bringing the curtain down on one of the most celebrated careers in Mexican football history.

The tears that followed Mexico’s 3–2 Round of 16 exit to England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup were not simply those of defeat. They were the tears of a legend bidding farewell to the game that had defined his life.

Long before his final appearance, Ochoa had already hinted that the end was near.

In FIFA’s Letters That Unite video series released ahead of the tournament, the veteran goalkeeper admitted he could not imagine football without Mexico’s national team.

“I can’t imagine my career without the national team. I don’t know what my career would be like without the national team.

“And now that my time with the national team is ending, I don’t see any more meaning in football. I don’t see any more meaning in continuing to play. I don’t see the point in keeping on playing.”

The 40–year–old also reflected on his international journey with gratitude.

“I’ve enjoyed each moment here. I gave it my all. I leave peacefully and with my head held high and I am proud to have experienced this.”

Nicknamed “San Memo” and “La Muralla Mexicana” by the football fraternity, Ochoa leaves behind a remarkable legacy spanning nearly three decades, 153 international appearances and six FIFA World Cup squads – equalling Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for the most World Cup squad selections by a player.

His greatest moments came on football’s biggest stage.

At Brazil 2014, Ochoa announced himself to the world with a career-defining performance against the hosts, producing six saves – including a stunning header from Neymar – to earn Mexico a goalless draw and one of the tournament’s most iconic goalkeeping displays.

Although El Tri’s campaign ended in heartbreaking fashion against the Netherlands in the Round of 16, Ochoa had cemented his place among the world’s elite goalkeepers.

He once again rose to the occasion at Russia 2018, playing a pivotal role as Mexico stunned defending champions Germany 1-0 in one of the nation’s greatest World Cup victories.

Even at Qatar 2022, where Mexico suffered its first group-stage elimination in more than a quarter-century, Ochoa delivered another unforgettable moment by saving Robert Lewandowski’s penalty in a 0-0 draw against Poland.

His sixth and final World Cup came on home soil, where he became the oldest Mexican player to feature at the tournament after appearing against Czechia at 40 years and 346 days old. Mexico’s campaign eventually ended in a 3–2 defeat to England in the Round of 16, marking the final chapter of an extraordinary career.

Renowned for his extraordinary reflexes, fearless shot-stopping and unwavering commitment to El Tri, Ochoa inspired generations of supporters and established himself as one of the greatest goalkeepers in Mexican football history.

His farewell may have come in defeat, but his legacy will forever be remembered through the countless saves, unforgettable World Cup performances and unwavering pride with which he wore the green jersey.
