KUCHING: Beyond its lanterns, moon cakes and festive stalls, the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival is a celebration of unity, family ties and the bonds that hold the community together.

In stating this, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng also reminded celebrants of the festival’s long history dating back over 3,500 years to the Shang Dynasty.

“This is the most blessed time of the year, not only to celebrate the harvest and admire the beauty of the full moon, but more importantly, to unite with family and loved ones,” he said.

He said this during the launch of the Mid-Autumn Festival Market 2025 at The Podium on Saturday.

Wee further said what makes the festival truly meaningful is its ability to bring together families, neighbours and even visitors from near and far to share joy, laughter and a sense of belonging.

“In a time when the world can feel divided, festivals like this remind us that we are stronger and happier when we come together as one,” he said.

He also called on the community to carry the spirit of unity, harmony and love beyond the celebration so that it continues to shine even after the lanterns are taken down.

On the festival market, he said it had truly brought the festival spirit alive, featuring live music, moon cake-making activities, culinary contests and creative programmes for children.

“For food lovers, there is plenty to enjoy – from festive snacks to moon cakes – while craft stalls also offer unique treasures for visitors to bring home as mementos,” he added.

He also extended his best wishes to all, expressing hope that the upcoming full moon would bring happiness, peace and good fortune, and that the community would enjoy a joyful and memorable Mid-Autumn Festival.

Meanwhile, the Mid-Autumn Festival Market 2025 runs from September 13 to 16.
