KUCHING: The Mid-Autumn Festival turned out to be more than just a cultural celebration for residents of Jln Mathies, Padungan Utara and Bukit Mata, as a community outreach programme brought them together in a meaningful way.

The event, organised by Kuching South City Council (MBKS) councillor Eric Tay  and his team in collaboration with the local Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK), saw the distribution of over 100 vegetarian meal sets, several hundred mooncakes and 70 bags of rice, all contributed by generous donors.

Tay said the programme symbolised care and compassion while strengthening communal bonds.

“Festive and charitable activities like this carry deep meaning for our community.

“They bring warmth and unity, inspiring everyone to play a role in building a harmonious, progressive and hopeful society,” he said.

Tay also shared that since the formation of his team, they have been organising vegetarian meal distributions on the first and fifteenth day of every lunar month.

This regular effort, he explained, promotes both the health benefits of vegetarian food and a culture of sharing.

He revealed that some had advised him not to organise such programmes so frequently, but he chose to persevere.

“I do this because I don’t want residents to feel disappointed, and I don’t want the spirit of kindness in our community to fade away,” he said firmly.

The event, which has grown into a tradition over the years, also saw active participation from young volunteers who helped distribute food and maintain order.

Tay expressed pride in seeing more youth stepping forward to serve meaningfully.

“In today’s complex world, it is my honour to guide our youth towards positive and meaningful causes,” he said.

Tay also expressed appreciation to his team members and the police for ensuring the programme ran smoothly and safely.
