LUBOK ANTU: A man’s bold attempt to smuggle four undocumented foreigners into the state was foiled during an integrated crime prevention operation on Sunday (Dec 14).
The enforcement drive, which covered Engkilili and Lubok Antu areas, involved 29 officers from the district police headquarters (IPD) mobilised to intercept suspected illegal activities along key routes.
During the operation, police arrested a local suspect and a foreign accomplice for their alleged involvement in migrant smuggling.
They are being investigated under Section 26A of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act (ATIPSOM) 2007.
Meanwhile, three other foreigners were taken into custody under Sections 6(1)(c) and 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1969/63 for failing to produce valid permits and overstaying.
The sweep was not just limited to the smuggling case as officers also inspected 105 individuals and 95 vehicles, which led to 27 summonses issued for various traffic offences.
Lubok Antu police assured that operations and patrols will be further intensified to curb human trafficking and migrant smuggling activities, particularly in border areas.
Members of the public are strongly urged to report any cross-border crimes to the police for immediate action.
