KUCHING: The Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID) marked a historic milestone with the launch of its first-ever MIID Interior Design conference in Sarawak, drawing interior designers, architects, students and industry professionals from across the state.

Themed ‘SANCTUARY’, the conference today highlighted the critical role of interior design in creating safe, restorative and human-centred spaces, emphasising the profession’s contribution to Sarawak’s vision of an innovative, sustainable and inclusive society by 2030.

MIID President Adjunct Professor IDr Norshafina Ibrahim, said that the conference is not just an event but serves as a platform to strengthen their presence, support and collaboration with the Interior Design community across Sarawak.

“As the national institute representing the profession, MIID is committed to ensuring that interior designers in every region, including East Malaysia, have access to continuous professional development, industry engagement and platforms that elevate the standards and recognition of our field,” she said in her speech at the event.

She also said that MIID remains firmly aligned with the profession’s legislative and regulatory framework under the Board of Architects Malaysia, which sets the responsibilities, ethical standards and expectations for interior designers across the country.

“Our role is to support interior designers here in Sarawak in understanding, navigating and upholding these standards as the profession continues to strengthen its identity and gain wider recognition.

“This commitment also aligns closely with Sarawak’s broader development vision – a vision of becoming a thriving, innovative and sustainable society by 2030.

“As Sarawak moves toward a future driven by data, creativity, inclusivity and environmental responsibility, interior design becomes an essential partner in shaping human-centred spaces that reflect these aspirations,” she said.

She added that MIID is playing its role in the journey by nurturing talent, strengthening professional capacity and supporting the creation of built environments that contribute to the state’s social well-being, economic prosperity and cultural identity.

“Events like today are crucial in supporting that mission. By bringing together interior designers, architects, students, academics and industry players, we are helping to build an ecosystem where Interior Design in Sarawak can grow, be understood and be appreciated at the level it deserves,” she said.
