KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) is working towards a “50/50” strategic rebalancing of Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) personnel between Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia to ensure regional defence parity.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin revealed that current troop strength in East Malaysia stands at approximately 30,000 personnel, with Sarawak slated as a priority for future expansion.
“Our long-term planning is to ensure that the distribution of members between West and East Malaysia is equal.
“Consequently, any major increase in troop strength moving forward will be prioritised for Sarawak,” he said during a media conference following his working visit to Kem Muara Tuang today (April 9).
He revealed that this surge will be driven by the establishment of the Fourth Naval Regional Headquarters (MAWILLA 4), which will proceed once land-related matters are resolved.
In addition to strategic assets, Khaled emphasised that personnel welfare – particularly housing – is the backbone of national readiness.
He stressed that projects like the Armed Forces Family Housing (RKAT) must avoid delays to ensure soldiers can carry out operations without being distracted by family living conditions.
“Readiness is not just about assets; it is about the members. When they are on duty or in operations, we want them to perform smoothly without being worried about their families or the state of their homes. That is why housing is a top priority,” he said.
Commenting on the recent release of SPM results, Khaled expressed confidence in attracting the younger generation to join the military.
He highlighted modern initiatives, such as the Work-Based Learning (WBL) programme and robust post-retirement career pathways, serve as strong incentives for youth to view the ATM as a viable and rewarding career.
“Unlike some countries that face severe recruitment challenges, we still see high interest. By ensuring our members are well-prepared for the job market after their service, we continue to enhance the appeal of joining the armed forces,” he added.
