TATAU: The public are reminded to avoid open burning activities in the current hot and dry weather due to the risk of fires that can threaten the safety and health of the community.
Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department Datuk Seri John Sikie Tayai said the recent forest fire incident in Kuala Tatau should serve as a reminder to all parties of the seriousness of the threat.
“The forest fire in Kuala Tatau involved an area of approximately 300 hectares and took 11 days of operation to be extinguished by the fire department. This shows how serious the risk of fire is during the dry season,” he was reported as saying in an UKAS report.
In this regard, Sikie stressed the importance of a responsible attitude among the community, including avoiding cigarette butt littering, which could potentially start fires, particularly in areas prone to such risk.
At the same time, he also advised the public to prioritise their health by ensuring adequate water intake and limiting outdoor activities during hot weather to avoid the risk of dehydration and heat stroke.
Earlier, he officiated the e-Invoice and Special Government Assistance External Counter Programme by the Sarawak Inland Revenue Board and the launching of the Sumbangan Keperluan Asas Sarawak for Tatau District.
