KUCHING: Parents, schools, and childcare workers are urged to take proactive steps in safeguarding the wellbeing of children during the hot weather.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri has raised concern over the impact of prolonged hot weather on children, as they are the most vulnerable to it.

“With temperatures soaring across the country, the risk of heat-related illnesses among young ones has become a pressing public health concern,” she said when speaking to reporters at the Bank Rakyat Riang Ria Syawal event here yesterday (April 5).

Also present was Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof.

She advised families to limit children’s exposure to hot outdoor environments and to closely monitor their physical activities, particularly during peak afternoon hours.

“When children fall ill due to the heat, it not only places a physical burden on the child but also creates additional challenges for the family.

“Seeking hospital treatment during such periods can be difficult, which is why prevention is key,” she added.

Nancy also reminded childcare centre workers to ensure that children always remain within protected indoor premises during hazardous weather conditions.

“Outings or outdoor activities are strictly discouraged until conditions improve,” she said.

The Social Welfare Department (JKM) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting communities during both flood and heatwave situations.

With a nationwide force of 4,715 personnel, including counsellors and psychology officers, JKM stands ready to respond swiftly to crises affecting the public.
