KUCHING: Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, has called for a smooth and democratic leadership transition ahead of the Sarawak Football Association (FAS) Annual General Meeting (AGM), scheduled for June 14.

Abdul Karim said the decision on the next leadership should be left entirely to the affiliates.

“Let the democratic process within FAS take its course, since this is the FAS AGM or General Assembly.

“As the minister overseeing sports, I hope the AGM will run smoothly.

“Whoever becomes the next president or chairman of FAS will be decided by the divisional affiliates who will vote during the AGM,” he told reporters on Sunday.

Abdul Karim, who also serves as Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister, was responding to a question on whether he hoped to see a new face at the helm of FAS.

He stressed that the most important thing is having capable leadership.

“As it is, I wouldn’t want to speculate, whether it’s a new face or not. Sometimes, if a new face doesn’t know how to do the job, what’s the point? The same goes for old faces.

“What we really want are individuals who are truly passionate and committed to the association or organisation they are contesting in,” he said.

FAS President, Abang Zulkarnain Abang Abdul Rahman, recently announced that he will not be defending his position ahead of the 2025-2027 AGM.

The meeting is set to take place on June 14.
