THE Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP) has secured an additional RM3.37 million to fund 15 tourism-related projects across Sarawak.
Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the projects, obtained through collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), will focus on upgrading and repairing tourism facilities and homestays.
During his ministerial winding-up speech in the august House today, he said among the projects listed are upgrades to Telaga Air Waterfront, Bako National Park, Bukit Lambir National Park, and the jungle trekking trails at Taman Tumbina.
Improvements will also be made to visitor facilities at the Tun Ahmad Zaidi Nature Reserve in Sibu, and several homestays, including those in Santubong, Lobang Batu, and Rumah Margretta Kerangan Buloh in Julau.
Abdul Karim added that infrastructure development remains crucial in supporting the tourism sector, which is a key pillar of Sarawak’s economic growth.
Karim highlighted several major projects currently being implemented by the Sarawak Government to boost accessibility and tourism appeal, including the transformation of the historic Old Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Building into a world-class performing arts centre.
The venue, inspired by London’s Royal Albert Hall, is scheduled for completion by the end of 2027.
Other upcoming projects include the Sarawak Craft Centre (set for implementation in 2026), the redevelopment of MBKS Swimming Pool into a Water Fun Park and Gastronomy Centre by early 2026, and the Tourists Support Centre for Lundu and Sematan, which is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
As the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) ends this year, Abdul Karim expressed optimism that the 13MP will further elevate Sarawak’s tourism industry and support its vision of becoming a leading tourism destination by 2030.
