KUCHING: A new competency guideline has been introduced to standardise training and licensing for pipe fitters and main layers across Sarawak.
Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said the ‘Guideline for Accredited Institutions on Competency Training and Examination for Main Layer and Pipe Fitter Licenses’ is aimed at raising the quality of work and strengthening Sarawak’s water supply services.
“The guidelines introduced not only serve as a foundation for the implementation of competency training and examinations by accredited institutions, but also contribute to improving the quality of pipe laying and fitting work in the industry.

“In line with the growing demand for skilled labour, the Ministry will continue to expand collaborations with qualified institutions to produce more skilled workers,” he said.
He said this in his speech during the Ministry’s Excellence Service Awards (ESA) and Innovation Awards 2024 at Damai Lagoon Resort here last night (July 4).
Julaihi also urged more Sarawakians, especially youths, to take up competency-based training in pipe-laying and fitting to meet the growing demand for skilled workers in the water and electricity sectors.
“Having a competent workforce is crucial to ensure that water supply projects in Sarawak can be implemented smoothly and efficiently.
“These are among the key prerequisites, especially for contractors registered under the Unit Pendaftaran Kontraktor Kerja (UPKJ),” he added.
