KUCHING: The Ministry of Communications, through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), will expand efforts to educate the public about digital ethics and online risks by involving students at various levels of education, including universities.

Deputy Communications Minister I Teo Nie Ching said that with increasing internet access and higher speeds — reaching up to 800 Mbps in areas such as the National Information Dissemination Centres (NADI) — online security challenges have become a major issue that needs serious attention.

As such, she said, MCMC together with initiatives like NADI is actively carrying out the “Internet Safe” campaign to raise cyber security awareness among the public.

“Our goal this year is to enter schools — whether primary, secondary, or universities — to engage them directly. We want to educate society about ethics and the risks that exist in this digital world,” she told a press conference after launching NADI Padungan here today (Apr 14).

Meanwhile, Teo also advised internet users to be ethical and responsible digital citizens.

“Do not misuse the internet facilities that have been provided. Many acts have been updated or newly introduced, so I hope we will tighten our laws further to ensure we are prepared to face new challenges.

“But at the same time, let us all be ethical and responsible internet users. If something — a statement or an action — is not something we would say or do in the real world, face-to-face, then maybe it’s something we shouldn’t create as content or put on the internet either.”
