THE Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts is open to supporting tourism-related proposals brought forward by state assemblymen, with several initiatives already under review.
Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said this in response to a proposal raised during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here.
He said his ministry welcomed the idea of promoting turtles as a tourist attraction at Talang Satang National Park.
“We will work with Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), the Forest Department, and the Sarawak Museum Department to explore this proposal further.
“Gunung Pueh is undergoing a proposal to be recognised as a Unesco Biosphere Reserve,” he said.
Abdul Karim added that the Ministry would evaluate another proposal to develop tourism around the Muara Sungai Badengan beach area.
“Any development must align with the Sarawak Tourism Masterplan guidelines to ensure sustainable growth,” he added.
In response to another matter, Abdul Karim said the Sarawak Craft Council will assess the need for a dedicated craft centre in Selangau.
“We take note of the growing interest in craft-based tourism and will consider this in line with our broader plan to support high-quality local craftsmanship,” he said.
The Ministry also acknowledged the eco-tourism potential of Ulu Oya, Ulu Mukah, and Ulu Selangau, and will collaborate with local councils and relevant agencies to develop these areas.
Abdul Karim also responded positively to a proposal to include the Krian Fest and the Kabong International Beach Trail Marathon in the Sarawak Tourism Calendar of Events.
Meanwhile, the Ministry will also review a request for increased funding support for the 8th Siniawan Country Music Festival, which is expected to expand with two additional ceremonies this year.
Lastly, Abdul Karim noted the proposals from the assemblymen for Repok and Jepak concerning the construction of a new convention centre.
“The government will consider such a project if there is a proven need and sufficient market demand,” he said.
