KUCHING: The Miri Disaster Management Operation Room has been activated following a series of landslides triggered by continuous heavy rainfall since Tuesday (Jan 28).
Senadin assemblyman Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the operation room is now running 24 hours to coordinate disaster response efforts.
“The landslide happened due to the heavy rainfall since yesterday (Jan 28).
“And as a result, we have had a few landslides happen in Miri, including one near my housing area.
“The disaster management operation room has started today (Jan 29), and it will operate for 24 hours,” he said when met by reporters during the Chinese New Year (CNY) Open House at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here.
Lee assured that authorities remain on high alert, focusing on high-risk areas.
“The Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), Public Works Department (PWD) and Miri City Council will head down to places where there are floods and landslides.
“They will oversee what they can do to assist those affected by flood and landslide,” he added.
As of press time, seven people have been rescued, while one fatality has been reported due to a landslide that struck two houses in Kampung Lereng, Miri.
Three more victims remain missing.
