MIRI: The Miri chapter of the Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) has been singled out as the organisation’s most active and influential branch, underscoring its pivotal role in protecting Bidayuh identity, customs and heritage far from the community’s heartland.
DBNA president Datuk Ik Pahon Joyik said the branch has set the benchmark for community engagement, driven by sustained cultural, social and educational initiatives that continue to attract strong participation.
Addressing guests at the DBNA Nyak Kitak Biduruk 2025 dinner at Mega Hotel here on Saturday night, he said no other branch among DBNA’s 23 chapters across Sarawak matches Miri’s consistency and energy.
Also present was DBNA Miri chairman, Simon Ilus.
“This is the only branch that has maintained this level of activity and commitment,” he said, adding that the Miri leadership has built a reputation for delivering programmes that genuinely serve the community.
The celebration carries added significance as DBNA marks its 70th anniversary this year, a milestone that highlights seven decades of community building since its founding in 1955.
Ik Pahon said the association’s longevity reflects the strength of its members and their shared resolve to safeguard Bidayuh heritage.
He outlined three areas that will shape the community’s future in Miri: preserving cultural expressions such as traditional attire, dance and language; working collectively on native customary rights land documentation; and strengthening unity even when views differ.
To reinforce these efforts, Ik Pahon announced a RM10,000 contribution to DBNA Miri to support its cultural and social initiatives, describing it as a commitment to sustaining community resilience.
The event drew wide participation and was seen not only as an anniversary celebration but also as a renewed call for the community to uphold its heritage as it navigates the next chapter.
