MIRI: The Dewan Usahawan Bumiputera Sarawak (DUBS) Miri branch is stepping up efforts to deepen business linkages among entrepreneurs, strategic partners and the local community through a Ramadan breaking fast gathering, reflecting both economic intent and social cohesion.

Miri Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang said the convergence of cultural celebrations this month underlined the city’s multicultural character, as the Chinese community marks Chap Goh Mei, the traditional conclusion of the Lunar New Year, while Muslims prepare for Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Chap Goh Mei, he noted, symbolises a natural transition in Malaysia’s festive calendar.

“In the Chinese tradition, Chap Goh Mei marks the end of the official Lunar New Year celebrations. After that, we move towards Hari Raya,” he said. “This is a true reflection of our plural society, where communities celebrate one another’s festivals, be it Chinese, Muslim or Gawai, in the same shared spirit.”

He said such traditions should be preserved as they reinforce mutual respect and social harmony across communities.

Adam was speaking to reporters at the DUBS Miri branch’s breaking fast event held at the Persekutuan Persatuan-Persatuan Orang Ulu Sarawak Malaysia (FORUM) building here on Monday (Mar 2).

Meanwhile, DUBS Miri branch chairman Mohammad Hafidz Rohani said the event was designed not only as a social gathering but also as a strategic platform to strengthen business networks among members.

“Programmes like this are usually hosted at business premises owned by our members who offer breaking fast or Ramadan buffet packages,” he said. “By doing so, we are directly supporting their businesses while, at the same time, expanding our professional networks.”
