MIRI: The Miri District Education Office (PPD Miri) has received a RM10,000 contribution from Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew to support its management and operational needs.

The announcement was delivered on his behalf by councillor Kelvin Chia Kah Leong during the 2024 Excellent Service Awards (APC) and 2025 Retirement Ceremony at Imperial Hotel on Wednesday (Aug 13).

Ting praised PPD Miri for its role in maintaining high academic standards, noting recent improvements in major national examinations.

Miri’s 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) results recorded an average grade of 4.38 — an improvement of 0.07 points — with 95.58 per cent of 3,052 candidates qualifying for certificates.

The Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) results also rose, with a 0.23-point increase in the cumulative grade point average to 3.03, and all candidates achieving full passes.

“These achievements demonstrate the unwavering commitment of Miri’s education community to ensuring academic and co-curricular excellence,” he said.

He also acknowledged the scale of PPD Miri’s responsibilities, which cover 62 schools — 46 primary and 16 secondary — involving 3,226 teachers, 442 support staff and 45,853 pupils.

The event honoured 277 recipients of the Excellent Service Award and 62 retirees, and featured performances by the Gema Gamelan Sainsri group and SK Pendidikan Khas Miri’s performance troupe.
