MIRI: The newly upgraded hanging bridge at Taman Awam Miri is scheduled to open to the public in early January 2025, according to Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin.

During a site visit to the bridge today, Lee confirmed that the upgrading works, which began on July 19, 2024, have been completed, with only minor touch-ups remaining.

The project, costing RM428,000, was completed within four months.

“The hanging bridge has been upgraded to ensure safety and comfort for users. Steel cables and other components have been inspected thoroughly, with replacements made where necessary to adhere to safety standards,” Lee said.

“We have prioritised long-term durability to reduce future maintenance costs.”

The hanging bridge is part of a larger development initiative in Taman Awam, which also includes the upgrading of the Forest Park and Rock Cliff area.

“The second project, involving the Forest Park and Rock Cliff, commenced on Oct 1, 2024, with a contract value of RM1.3 million,” Lee added.

“It is expected to be completed by the end of September 2025.

Currently, progress is at 20 per cent, slightly behind the 25 per cent target. I have urged the contractors, consultants, and engineers from Miri City Council to ensure the work is completed on schedule and adheres to specifications.”

The Taman Awam Miri development is part of Lee’s efforts to enhance public amenities in his Senadin constituency.

“I visited the site this morning and noted some progress. I reminded the contractors to strictly follow the project specifications to deliver quality facilities for public use,” he said.

Both projects aim to improve the recreational experience for visitors while ensuring safety and accessibility.

The hanging bridge, in particular, is expected to be a major attraction once it opens in January.
