MIRI: A light drizzle did little to dampen the patriotic spirit as more than 500 staff gathered at the Miri City Council’s Marina building this morning for a flag-raising ceremony marking the 20th anniversary of Miri’s city status.

Presiding over the solemn yet celebratory occasion was Miri Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang, who reflected on the city’s journey since May 20, 2005, when Miri was officially declared a city.

“Today, we stand together with pride and gratitude to witness a meaningful and symbolic event,” said Yii, addressing those present.

“This ceremony is more than just tradition. It reflects our identity, our unity, and our shared journey,” he added.

In a city once known primarily for oil, Yii’s remarks struck a chord as he paid tribute to Miri’s evolution into a dynamic urban centre.

“From a modest oil town to a thriving city, we have witnessed remarkable progress,” he said. “Miri today is not the same as it was 20 years ago,  it is bolder, greener, smarter, and more dynamic.”

Yii noted that Miri had not only drilled deep into its past but had risen to new heights.

“Let us continue to serve with integrity, passion, and excellence,” he urged, calling the day’s ceremony a symbol of the city’s “enduring pride and continued commitment”.

The ceremony also paid tribute to long-serving civil servants, honouring individuals with over two decades of continuous public service , a gesture the mayor said symbolised “our deepest appreciation for the loyalty, perseverance, and excellence that uphold the integrity of public service.”

Deputy Mayor Ariffin Mohamad and acting city secretary Abdul Rahman Taupek were among the officials in attendance.
