MIRI: More than 500 people took to the streets here this morning to mark the city’s 20th anniversary with a Car-Free Day event aimed at promoting sustainability and healthy living.
The initiative, organised by Miri City Council (MCC), introduced a new five-kilometre car-free route stretching from Jalan Bandaraya to Jalan Marina Utama.
Participants, including students, government officials and members of the public, engaged in activities such as fun runs, cycling, Zumba and community games.
Speaking at the launch, Miri Mayor, Adam Yii Siew Sang, said the event symbolised both a celebration of Miri’s city status and a shared commitment to a greener future.
“This event reflects our ongoing efforts to support the Sarawak Post-COVID Development Strategy, particularly in environmental sustainability, public health, and community engagement,” he said.
Yii highlighted that the initiative contributes to the broader goal of reducing carbon emissions, and transforming Sarawak into a low-carbon economy.
“The five-kilometre route not only encourages healthy living but also represents a small yet meaningful shift in urban mobility,” he added.
The event was part of the Local Agenda 21 (LA21) 2025 initiative, supported by the Sarawak Public Health, Housing and Local Government Ministry, and the Federal Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT).
“The strong turnout reflects the community’s growing awareness of the need for environmental care and sustainable living,” Yii said, thanking all agencies and volunteers involved.
Also in attendance were Miri Deputy Mayor, Ariffin Mohamad, and other city council representatives.
