MIRI: The city is set to become a centre of excellence for medical and technological innovation with the ambitious Kenyalang Smart City (KSC) project moving forward.

It aims to position the city as a regional leader in regenerative medicine and smart urban development.

During a recent briefing on KSC’s latest developments at its site office in Senadin, TAK Group of Companies chairman Teo Ah Khing highlighted the importance of integrating cutting-edge medical research and education within Miri’s expanding ecosystem.

Teo underscored the role of Fudan University, a world-renowned institution, in enhancing the city’s healthcare landscape by incorporating both modern and traditional medical disciplines.

“This initiative will not only make Miri an attractive destination for global talent but will also create a welcoming and thriving ecosystem for medical and technological advancements,” he said.

A key aspect of the city’s transformation is its growing reputation as a hub for regenerative medicine, particularly in stem cell research.

Professor Dato’ Sri Dr Mike Chan, chairman of the European Wellness Biomedical Group, emphasised the critical role stem cells will play in the future of medicine, describing them as the solution to previously untreatable conditions.

“I have always believed in treating the untreatable, and stem cells are the future of medicine,” Dr Chan stated.

“Miri has the potential to become a global centre for excellence in stem cell education and research, bringing together expertise from Japan, Germany, Switzerland, and the United States,” he said.

Dr Chan, a globally recognised pioneer in biotechnology and regenerative medicine, has contributed significantly to the field, with over 50 scientific books, over 100 research papers, and over 20 international patents.

He has also played a crucial role in setting Asean-wide guidelines on stem cell therapy, positioning Malaysia as a leader in the field.

He said Miri’s strategic location, academic partnerships, and political stability make it an ideal destination for world-class medical research and innovation.

“With the presence of top universities and strong government support, Miri is well-positioned to attract international investors and experts in regenerative medicine,” he added.

The Kenyalang Smart City (KSC) initiative is a transformative project that aligns with Sarawak’s Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030, aiming to create a sustainable, technology-driven urban hub.

Key features of KSC include:

Smart Infrastructure – Advanced transportation systems and energy-efficient buildings.

Digital Integration – A seamless digital ecosystem to enhance business, education, and healthcare.

Cultural & Civic Facilities – The Kenyalang Convention and Exhibition Centre (KCEC), Performing Arts Centre, and Cultural Heritage Museum, reinforcing Miri’s role as a cultural and business hub.

The integration of Fudan University into KSC further strengthens the city’s credentials as an education and research powerhouse.

The university is spearheading Phase 1 of the development, repurposing the Old Miri City Council and Old Resident Office into state-of-the-art medical and research facilities.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has officially welcomed Fudan’s investment in Miri, emphasising its role in addressing the state’s critical shortage of doctors and advancing healthcare capabilities.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian also noted that Fudan’s presence would be instrumental in training a new generation of Sarawakian doctors and researchers.
