MIRI: Police have intensified enforcement against illegal street racing following public complaints, seizing 10 motorcycles and issuing 40 traffic summonses during a late-night operation targeting what authorities described as “samseng jalanan” activity.

The operation, led by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Miri District Police Headquarters, was carried out between 11pm on Friday and 4am on Saturday across several known hotspots, including Jalan Piasau, Jalan Miri Bypass, Jalan Marina and Jalan Tanjong Lobang.

District police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the operation was mounted after repeated reports from residents about reckless riding, excessive noise and obstruction of traffic flow, particularly during late hours.

A total of 25 individuals were stopped during the operation, comprising 20 men and five women, along with 20 motorcycles inspected on the spot.

Checks revealed a range of offences, many of them linked to illegal modifications and non-compliance with basic road safety requirements.

These included riding without a valid licence, structural alterations to motorcycles, modified exhaust systems producing excessive noise, absence of side mirrors, missing registration plates and the use of non-compliant or decorative number plates.

Other technical violations were also recorded.

Ten motorcycles were seized under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987 and will be subjected to further investigation and enforcement action.

Mohd Farhan said police would not tolerate behaviour that endangers lives or undermines public order, stressing that street racing and reckless riding pose a serious risk not only to those involved but also to other road users.

“This kind of activity has no place on public roads,” he said, adding that enforcement operations would continue and could be intensified if necessary.

Police have urged motorists, particularly young riders, to comply fully with traffic laws, refrain from unauthorised vehicle modifications and respect the safety and peace of the wider community.

Members of the public with information on illegal street racing or related activities have been encouraged to contact the Miri District Police Headquarters to assist ongoing enforcement efforts.
