Miri police seize substantial amounts of drugs in raids

MIRI: Police here have arrested two suspects and confiscated a large quantity of illicit substances in separate operations.

The raids were conducted by the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (BSJND) and the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department from the Sarawak Contingent Headquarters.

At a press conference on Wednesday (April 30), Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah confirmed the arrests.

A 27-year-old foreign national was taken into custody following a raid at a popular entertainment centre in the city, where police seized significant amounts of drugs.

The haul included 1.3968g of Ecstasy powder, 37g of Ecstasy pills, 10.2g of Ketamine, and 66.9g of various substances, with a total estimated street value of RM25,620.

The quantity of drugs retrieved is believed to be sufficient to service approximately 1,509 users.

Initial tests indicate that the foreign national tested positive for methamphetamine.

Just over an hour later, at around 1.25pm, a second operation targeting a residential property in a housing area resulted in the arrest of a 35-year-old local man.

Authorities confiscated cannabis along with a vehicle valued at RM20,000.

The total street value of this seizure amounted to RM97,340, with the cannabis quantity estimated to impact as many as 155,002 potential users. Initial drug screenings on the local man returned negative results.

Both cases are now being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Also present at the press conference was Miri deputy police chief Supt Nur Asyhikin Abdullah.
