MIRI: The Miri Port Authority (MPA) is set to play a key role in Sarawak’s economic growth, with future expansion plans aimed at transforming it into a world-class port.

The development is expected to generate economic benefits across logistics, business distribution, and warehousing sectors while attracting further investment to Northern Sarawak.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas highlighted this vision during MPA’s New Year, Chinese New Year, and 42nd Anniversary Celebration, which also marked the launch of the port’s Anti-Bribery Management System MS ISO 37001:2016 implementation.

His speech was delivered by Datuk Majang Renggi, Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development.

As part of Sarawak’s Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, there is potential for Miri Port to expand towards the sea-front of Kuala Baram.

This strategic move could enhance the port’s global competitiveness, leveraging the deep waters off the Baram delta to accommodate larger vessels and increase trade efficiency.

“The government may consider developing a deep-sea port off the Kuala Baram delta. With comprehensive planning and by capitalising on its natural deep-water advantages, Miri Port has the potential to become one of the deepest ports in the world,” Uggah said.

Located just 15km from the shore, close to a 50m-deep continental shelf drop, Kuala Baram is envisioned as a versatile port capable of handling various types of cargo, including general cargo, containers, liquid and dry bulk, and even cruise vessels.

The development is expected to spur related industries such as shipbuilding, ship repairs, supply bases, and refineries.

With the state’s strategic vision under PCDS 2030, Miri Port is positioning itself as a major regional port, leveraging the rich natural resources in its hinterland.

“With a clear vision and mission, I am confident that Miri Port will achieve its world-class status by 2030,” Uggah added.

While awaiting the completion of the Kuala Baram dredging project, expected in early 2027, Miri Port is actively seeking strategic collaborations, particularly in the oil and gas sector.

Investments in the Kuala Baram Industrial Estate (KBIE) could pave the way for new industries geared towards exports and job creation.

“With the dredging project’s completion, we anticipate increased industrial activity and business expansion at Kuala Baram, further boosting the region’s economic potential,” Uggah noted.

The event also recognised Miri Port’s achievements over the past 42 years despite challenges faced in its operations.

Among those present were Miri Port Authority chairman Dato Paulus Palu Ngumbang and MPA general manager Serawa Budol.

As Miri Port moves forward with its expansion and modernisation efforts, it remains a critical component of Sarawak’s long-term economic growth strategy, paving the way for increased trade, investment, and job opportunities in the region.
