MIRI: Road accidents here have decreased by 4.1 per cent during the first four months of 2025 compared to the same period last year, dropping from 1,130 to 1,091 cases.
Despite the encouraging figures, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin has called on road users to remain vigilant and responsible, especially with the upcoming Gawai Dayak celebrations, which are expected to see a surge in traffic.
He stressed that the success of any road safety initiative largely depends on the attitude and discipline of drivers themselves.
“During festive seasons such as Gawai, Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, and Christmas, the number of vehicles on the road increases significantly, raising the risk of accidents,” he said during the launch of the Road Safety Campaign here yesterday (May 30).
Lee also reminded road users to obey speed limits, avoid using mobile phones while driving, maintain their vehicles in good condition, always wear seat belts, and refrain from driving when tired, drowsy, or under the influence of alcohol.
“Studies show that drivers who drive for more than two to three hours without rest quickly become fatigued and lose focus. I advise taking breaks every two hours or switching to an alternate driver if needed,” he added.
Lee also reported a decline in fatal accidents in Miri, from 19 to 14 cases, with fatalities dropping from 20 to 14 during the same period.
“While these improvements are encouraging, the ultimate responsibility for road safety lies with every individual on the road,” he said.
