MIRI: Flood mitigation efforts in the city have been intensified through integrated drainage cleaning and maintenance to ensure the safety of local residents.
Transport Minister and Senadin state assemblyman, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, said the state government, together with implementing agencies and local authorities, is committed to addressing drainage and flood issues for the well-being of the community.
“The Sarawak Government will continue to take immediate action together with MBM, the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), and the Public Works Department (JKR) while awaiting the implementation of large-scale flood mitigation projects,” he said when met by the media today.
Following a recent flood mitigation meeting involving various agencies, the Miri City Council (MBM) has stepped up operations by removing rubbish heaps along Jalan SUKMA, Desa Senadin, and placing communal Roll-On Roll-Off (RORO) bins to prevent uncontrolled waste disposal.
Lee said cleaning operations were also carried out in the Tudan area, particularly near SMK Tudan Jaya and SK Tudan Jaya, as well as the removal of wild vegetation and silt deposits along Jalan Jati 2D and near the Servay supermarket, which were identified as areas with blocked drainage.
He added that three major flood mitigation projects in Miri have been approved, with the Lutong and Krokop Jee Foh projects currently 71 per cent complete.
Meanwhile, another two projects, he said, will cover the route from Taman Tunku to Jalan Padang Kerbau, as well as the Senadin and Sungai Lutong areas, and will be implemented in phases.
