MIRI: Polis Diraja Malaysia has recognised Miri as one of the country’s top-performing districts in its latest ‘Ops Selamat’ operations, highlighting the division’s enforcement strength during peak festive travel periods.

The recognition was announced at a national appreciation ceremony in Kuala Lumpur recently, where the Miri Police Headquarters emerged as the top district in Category A for ‘Ops Selamat 25’.

The award was received by Miri Police Chief, ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah, underscoring the district’s operational leadership and execution on the ground.

The ceremony, held at the Police Training Centre, was officiated by the Inspector-General of Police, Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail, and attended by senior officers as well as strategic partners from key agencies and industry.

A total of 3,609 personnel were deployed nationwide during ‘Ops Selamat 25’ in conjunction with Chinese New Year, rising to 5,544 officers for ‘Ops Selamat 26’ during Hari Raya Aidilfitri, reflecting an expanded enforcement footprint.

Operations were driven by a “Pre-Emptive Services and Total Enforcement” approach, combining road safety advocacy, targeted monitoring at accident-prone locations, and the use of drones and aerial surveillance, supported by multi-agency collaboration.

Despite intensified enforcement, accident figures showed a slight increase. ‘Ops Selamat 26’ recorded 9,934 cases compared with 9,859 previously, while fatal accidents rose to 90 from 77.

Enforcement activity, however, increased significantly, with 144,726 summonses issued, up 34.8 per cent year-on-year, indicating a tougher stance on major traffic offences such as speeding, red-light violations and mobile phone use while driving.

At the national level, Selangor Police Contingent topped Category A for ‘Ops Selamat 25’, while Sabah and Perlis led Categories B and C.

For ‘Ops Selamat 26’, Johor emerged as the leading contingent in Category A, with Kedah and Melaka heading the other categories.

District-level recognition saw Kuala Krai and Jerantut leading Categories B and C respectively for ‘Ops Selamat 25’, while Johor Bahru Selatan, Seberang Perai Selatan and Bagan Datuk topped their respective categories for ‘Ops Selamat 26’.

The ceremony also highlighted the role of cross-sector collaboration, involving agencies and corporate partners, in strengthening road safety enforcement nationwide.
