MIRI: Miri City Council is committed to ensuring the city’s cleanliness and sustainability through the revitalisation of the ‘No Plastic Bag’ campaign.

Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang, who is also Pujut state assemblyman, informed that all supermarket operators were called to implement the no-plastic initiative more consistently, as its success depends on industry cooperation and community support.

“Our objective is not about money, but to ensure that Miri remains clean, green and sustainable,” he said during an interview after the Miri City Council Full Council Meeting for November 2025 at Miri City Hall on Friday.

According to him, plastic pollution, especially single-use plastics continues to be a major challenge, affecting the drainage system, city cleanliness, and the marine ecosystem, thus requiring firmer and more consistent action.

He also explained that Miri City Council has not received any portion of the 20-sen plastic bag charge since 2018.

Instead, the charge is now fully determined and managed by the supermarkets, without the Council’s involvement. Hence, he urged the public to adopt the practice of bringing their own recycle shopping bags when shopping, as a show of support for efforts to make Miri a plastic-free and sustainable city.
