MIRI: Sarawak is taking a bold step toward energy sustainability and reliability with the Miri Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) Power Plant.
The RM2 billion project, spearheaded by Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) and its partners, was officially launched today (Nov 30) with a groundbreaking ceremony here, officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
During the event, Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi explained the transformative potential of the project, which is set to significantly enhance the state’s energy infrastructure.
“The Miri CCGT will ensure a cleaner and reliable power supply for Miri and Northern Sarawak, contributing to our sustainability goals while advancing economic growth,” he said.
The plant, expected to become operational by the end of 2027, will add 500MW of electricity to Sarawak’s grid. This milestone aligns with the state’s goal of achieving 15GW of renewable energy capacity by 2035, driven by hydropower and clean energy technologies.
“This project is more than just infrastructure. It’s about people, economic growth, and Sarawak’s aspiration to become a high-income state by 2030.”
The Miri CCGT Power Plant reflects Sarawak’s commitment to sustainability by leveraging cleaner technologies and increasing domestic gas utilization from six percent to 30 percent by 2030.
The project not only addresses immediate energy demands but also sets the foundation for a sustainable energy future for generations to come.
“Sarawak is leading the region in clean energy production. By embracing responsible practices, we’re creating opportunities and ensuring the benefits of our natural resources reach our people,” Julaihi added.
Once operational, the plant is expected to create numerous direct employment opportunities, further bolstering Sarawak’s industrial workforce.
“From planning to execution, every detail has been carefully considered. This milestone is a testament to the dedication of all involved,” he said, commending PETROS and its partners for their efforts.
“As we move forward, let us ensure Sarawak remains a progressive state with world-class energy solutions. Together, we can build a brighter, sustainable future for our people and generations to come,” Julaihi added.
