MIRI: Miri’s public transport system will undergo continuous modernisation with innovative and user-friendly initiatives, says Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin.

He stressed that it is the state government’s commitment, vision and strategy to strengthen urban mobility towards a more sustainable future.

“The Miri City Smart Bus was introduced to meet the needs of more efficient, affordable and environmentally friendly public transport.

“This initiative will benefit local residents, especially the low-income group, students and tourists, alongside contributing to reducing traffic congestion and carbon pollution,” he said in an exclusive interview with MiriFM (KITA 1.0), RTM Miri on the Miri City Smart Bus in conjunction with the World Radio Day 2025 recently.

He also mentioned that a total of 14 new Volvo buses with a capacity of 33 seats and space for 21 standing passengers are provided for the public.

“These buses are also equipped with modern technology such as free Wi-Fi, a real-time GPS tracking system via the SMART CITY application, LED screens displaying main routes, as well as low-floor ramps for the convenience of disabled groups.

“This bus service covers eight main routes around Miri, including Permyjaya, Taman Tunku, Senadin, Tudan, Miri Hospital, Sungai Rait-Bakam, Kuala Baram, and RTM.

“As of January 2024, this service has recorded 72,329 total riders, showing an encouraging response from the community,” he said.

Lee said that in an effort to further strengthen the public transport system, the Miri Sentral Bus Terminal located in Miri Bypass has officially begun operating on Jan 18, 2025, replacing the Pujut Bus Terminal.

He further explained that the new terminal offers various modern facilities, including 12 ticket counters, 12 retail outlets, 14 bus platforms, two cafes, a spacious and comfortable waiting area, as well as disabled-friendly public toilets.

To improve operational efficiency, Konsortium Bas Express (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd (KBE) has introduced the Easybook Terminal Management (ETM) system which allows ticket purchases online, at the counter in person and via smartphone applications.

The use of QR codes as tickets also helps speed up the entry process and reduce congestion at the counter. The terminal operates daily from 5am to 11pm.
