KUCHING: Miri shuttlers, Wafa Shahminah and Wendy Feebie, are just one win away from the final after storming into the semifinals of the SBA Junior Badminton Tournament 2025.

The duo impressed in the quarterfinals, winning their singles ties before combining to deliver a commanding performance in the girls’ under-16 doubles.

As a pair, Wafa and Wendy swept aside their Samarahan opponents 21-8, 21-8 to seal a straight-sets victory and a spot in the double’s semifinals.

In singles, both also advanced with confident wins, and now each will face Kuching opponents in the last four.

Together, they will also meet a Kuching duo in the double’s semifinals.

Both players told Sarawak Tribune today at the SBA Hall of their excitement at the prospect of reaching the finals, acknowledging that the next step will be their toughest challenge yet.

“I’m excited because I made it to the semifinals,” said Wafaa, who trains daily in Miri with an intensive routine stretching from morning to evening.

“It’s one more step before the final, but I’ll need to give my best.”

Wendy, who hails from Batu Niah and represents the Lun Bawang-Iban community, shared the same optimism.

“I feel excited and confident. There’s a big chance to reach the final,” she said.

Their performances underline the strength of Miri’s junior badminton programme, which continues to unearth talents from towns such as Batu Niah and Bekenu.

The SBA Junior Badminton Tournament 2025, which began yesterday (Friday, Sept 5) at the Sarawak Badminton Association Hall, runs until tomorrow (Sunday, Sept 7), with players battling for state ranking and selection.
