MUKAH: A two-day search for a missing boatman ended this morning when his body was found floating in Batang Oya, just 50 metres from where his vessel capsized.
The victim, 60-year-old Henry Stamslaus Secon, was discovered at around 9.15 am near Kampung Tanam Seberang, Dalat, by members of the public who quickly alerted rescuers.
At approximately 3.30 pm on Saturday, a a witness spotted a boat slam into a jetty near a riverside house before flipping over
. Upon inspecting the overturned boat, the witness found no sign of the lone occupant, sparking fears he had been swept away by the current.
Following the discovery this morning, emergency responders retrieved the body and brought it to a nearby jetty, where distraught family members confirmed the victim’s identity.
The body has since been handed over to the police for transport to the Mukah Hospital mortuary.
The multi-agency Search and Rescue (SAR) operation—which drew personnel from the Mukah Fire and Rescue (Bomba) station, Dalat auxiliary firefighters, the police, the Civil Defence Force (APM), and RELA—was officially called off at 11:00 AM.
