SIBU: The Search and Rescue (SAR) operation for a 40-year-old deckhand believed to have fallen into the river while boarding a trawler in Tanjung Manis ended in tragedy when his body was found this morning (May 3).

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the victim, identified as Tan San Belati, was found by a member of the public near WTK factory at 7.50 am.

“The victim’s body was found approximately 3km from the Bomba Control Post,” the department said in a statement today (3 May).

The body was handed over to the police for further action.

The SAR operation concluded at 8.50 am.

Yesterday, the department said eyewitnesses reported that the victim was believed to be returning to the trawler to rest after spending time with co-workers.

“While descending the jetty to board the vessel, he is thought to have slipped and fallen into the river,” it said.

The man’s co-workers initially attempted to locate him but were unsuccessful.
