SONG: A missing farmer who was believed to have fallen into Sungai Bangkit in Katibas was found dead on Sunday (July 5), bringing a two-day search and rescue (SAR) operation to a tragic end.
Song police chief DSP Benedict Faris Jimoy said the body of Sumok Jugah, 56, from Rumah Lasin, Nanga Nansang, Sungai Bangkit, was recovered at around 2.55pm.
“The victim was found in Sungai Bangkit, about 100m upstream from the location where his boat had earlier been discovered.
“His body was taken to Song Health Clinic, where a medical officer confirmed his death. The victim was later identified by his younger sibling.”
Sumok had been reported missing on Friday (July 3) after he was believed to have fallen into the river from his boat after buying a cooking gas cylinder from a shop in Nanga Bangkit.
The incident came to light after residents of the longhouse found his boat drifting upstream along Sungai Bangkit with no one on board, prompting a multi-agency SAR operation.
The operation, which entered its second day, involved the police, the Fire and Rescue Department, the Civil Defence Force, Song auxiliary firefighters and villagers.
Following the discovery and recovery of the victim’s body, the SAR operation was officially called off at 3.10pm.
