Missing fisherman found dead after casting nets in river

PADAWAN: An elderly man who went missing after going out to fish early yesterday morning (Nov 4), was found dead in Sungai Temenggong, Matang later that night (Nov 4).

The victim, identified as Zailani Jenis, 61, had left home around 3 am to set his fishing nets but failed to return.

His family, who went to check the river, discovered Zailani’s boat at around 4 pm but could not find him.

Padawan police chief Supt Mohd Irwan Hafiz Md Radzi said the victim’s daughter lodged a missing person’s report at Batu Kawa police station at 7.39 pm.

“At around 9 pm, villagers who were fishing nearby found the Zailani’s body not far from his boat, about five metres from where he had set his net.

“Paramedics confirmed that the victim had died, and his body was sent to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) for a post-mortem,” he said.

The case has been classified as sudden death.
