Firefighters are carrying the body of the victim to the waiting police truck.

KABONG: The body of a victim of a boat that sank near the mouth of Sungai Paloh here last Saturday was found yesterday morning.

The body of Abang Madehan Abang Awi, 43, was found by three villagers at 8.34am about two kilometres from the location where the boat had sunk.

According to one of the villagers, Buserah Saili, 43, he and two other friends were scouring the river for the victim when he spotted a red object floating in the river.

He said as they got closer to the object, they noticed that it was the victim.

Buserah said they alerted the firefighters who then went to the scene to retrieve the body.

The body was later handed over to the police who took it to Saratok Hospital for further action.

Last Saturday, Abang Madehan who is also Kampung Paloh Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) chairman was reported missing after the boat he was travelling in with 12 other villagers sank near the mouth of the river.

One of the surviving victims, Hermantino, a firefighter from Bintulu fire station said the boat was laden with boxes of drinking water and it was raining heavily, coupled with strong winds at the time of the incident.

He said the boat was heading to Kampung Paloh and the drinking water was for the villagers who had been affected by drought since last month.

Hermantino said the boat sank after it was hit by strong waves upon reaching the mouth of the river at around 12.40pm.
