BINTULU: Malaysia LNG (MLNG) donated 250 fire extinguishers to 28 longhouses along Jalan Ulu Sebauh as part of its community outreach initiative.

Minister for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development, Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, said the contribution would help residents take early action in the event of a fire, thereby improving safety and protection in longhouse communities.

He emphasised that such fire safety awareness programmes are vital in strengthening residents’ preparedness for emergencies and reducing the risk of unwanted disasters.

“Programmes like this should be continued to ensure that rural communities are more aware of safety aspects, understand how to use fire extinguishers, and know the correct procedures to follow during emergencies,” he said when officiating the MLNG Outreach Programme: ‘Generasi Sihat, Komuniti Selamat’ held at Rumah Jambai @ Kamaruddin Ensut recently.

He also advised longhouse residents to carefully assess the status and condition of the land before constructing new longhouses to ensure the chosen site is safe and suitable.

In addition, he encouraged longhouse communities to avoid breaking up existing settlements, and instead apply for verification from the District Office to form officially recognised longhouses – which must have at least 20 doors, in line with existing regulations.

Dr Rundi also expressed his appreciation to the 28 longhouses that took the time to attend briefing sessions conducted by various government agencies since the programme began on October 3.

The MLNG Outreach Programme aims to enhance public awareness and understanding of fire hazards, prevention measures, emergency response, and electrical safety within longhouse communities.
