SIBU: The EcoPlus, a ground-breaking mobile application that embodies the essence of environmental awareness and community collaboration marked its soft launching at the premises of University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) here today (Oct 17).

UTS’s deputy Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Shahril Osman and chairman of Sibu Municipal Council Clarence Ting Ing Horth jointly officiated at the soft launching ceremony.

According to Prof Shahril, EcoPlus App is the result of a fruitful partnership between the SMC and UTS.

He said the application introduces waste collection services facilitated by e-hailing, a community waste to wealth programme, utilising QR codes, a comprehensive reward system, and a leader board feature.

These functionalities, he explained, not only simplify the recycling process but also incentivise community participation, creating a positive cycle of environmental consciousness.

He pointed out that one of the key strengths of Ecoplus lies in its ability to collect recycled waste data systematically, categorised according to district zones.

He said this data will be subjected to rigorous analytics, generating valuable insights that will be shared with the local council and the Sarawak government.

By providing this information, he said the EcoPlus aims to enhance decision-making process, optimise resource allocation and ultimately contribute to the sustainable development of the community.

Prof Shahril was delighted to announce that EcoPlus is now accessible to the public and available for download on Google Playstore, Apple AppStore, and Huawei AppGallery.

“We encourage each and everyone of you to explore the app, engage with its features, and actively participate in our shared mission of building a greener, more sustainable future.

“By harnessing the power of technology, we can empower individuals, educate communities and inspire a global movement towards a more environmentally conscious society.

“On behalf of UTS, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to SMC for their trust and willingness to entrust us to launch this apps. I hope we can continue and discuss more opportunity for future collaboration,” Prof Shahril added.
