SARIKEI: The modern design of Iban longhouses reflects the improving and stabilising economic conditions of the rural communities, said Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang.

He said this in reference to Rh Fabian Unggang, Julau which he described as beautiful, modern and impressive.

He stressed that the longhouse is a significant identity of the Iban community and that this image must be preserved for generations to come.

“Modern longhouses, can inspire and positively influence younger generations to maintain the tradition of returning home for festive celebrations or other communal gatherings,” he said.

He said this at the Pre-Christmas Celebration 2024 at Rumah Fabian Unggang Pandang, Km 25 Jalan Julau-Entabai, Sg Sapi, Julau here yesterday (Nov 30).

However, Gira emphasised that traditional wooden longhouses should not be left to deteriorate, even as many Iban communities have begun transitioning to sturdier brick-based structures.

“This is because older longhouses hold potential as an economic resource for local Iban communities, particularly as homestay accommodation for both domestic and international tourists,” he said.

He added that the concept of the longhouse remains a central cultural image for the Iban community.

At the programme, Gira also highlighted the economic opportunities in agriculture and identified Julau as having significant potential for agricultural development, given its still-pristine landscape.

He advised the Iban community in Julau to continue surveying their land with the assistance of the Land and Survey Department to ensure their land is protected and gazetted under Section 18.

“Our land is our asset and heritage,” he stressed.

At the celebration, Gira also distributed Minor Rural Project (MRP) grants to the longhouse, the Julau Water Sports Association (Powerboat), and 14 other longhouses in the Julau area.

Also present were Gira’s wife Anita Anthony Ijan, Selangau District Officer Yalin Asan and Miri Port General Manager Serawa Budol.
